New adventure! So, I've been working on a new blog and I'm super excited to share it with all of you. I wanted a separate blog for my animation work so here it is. It's called Puppets & Things and I will be posting anything and everything with regards to my own stop-motion work and any other cool stop-motion stuff I come across daily, from tips and tricks to inspirational work from other stop-motion artists.

This was for our Advanced Typography class where we had to pick a word and make it progress from a pictorial illustration to type. The dimensions were 4"x30". The size itself was a new challenge for me since I've never worked on an illustration with this sort of exaggerated frame of reference. This was a really fun piece to work on and I'm quite happy with how it turned out.

This was my initial sketch.

My first official stop motion clip!!!

This was part of a group project we had to do for our experimental animation class and I decided to (of course) do my part of the video with stop motion. I wanted to go for a sort of quirky style with the puppet and the music. I see a lot things that I have to improve on, which is a good thing because I'm learning quite a lot. Like how much thought should go in to my production work and post production work, figuring out how make the puppet stand, figuring out the lighting, walk/run cycles for the puppet and details like making the animation interesting with secondary animations (clouds move and etc.).

But but but, I'm super excited to do more of these!!! :D

Hello! New year, new things!

I wanted to try my hand at illustrating in different techniques this year, so here I am. For our Entrepreneurial Illustration class we were to design a gig poster and since Sam Amidon is coming to town (and I get to go! Woot!) I decided to do a gig poster for that event. I'm still trying things out with this technique and I wish I had more time to actually build an environment for him, but for now, I'm happy with how it turned out. It took an entire weekend just to make the puppet. A bit time consuming, but I'm hoping to make more since I've pretty much gotten the hang of it.

The character itself was inspired by one of his songs. I made him out of wire, sculpey (for the face, hands and shoes), cloth, paper (hair) and other little odds and ends I could find. The cloth I used were fabric samples my mum got for me from Kandygs during my visit home. A nice investment I would say :)

Here's how I went about in making the lil' fella.

Also, this got chosen for the annual Art of Illustration (AOI) show that the illustration dept. of our school organizes. :)!

Hello! Excuses for not posting in ages - um - summer, working two jobs, and no time to do as much art as I would have liked to. BUT, all is well because I finally got myself a brand new macbook pro with the money I had saved up and also managed to ehem, *whistles and looks around* 'acquire' the whole CS5 suite.

Junior year of school has begun, I have no idea how to finance this year of school, but, all my classes are going well. I'm finally getting into more illustration specific things this year so I'm really excited about all the assignments we've been getting so far. This particular piece is for my Illustrative Drawing class. In the fall semester of this class, the class goes to the zoo to draw animals and then we get to create our own story/concepts based on the animals we see. So the whole of the semester, all we do is, create/write our stories, write scenes, design environments, design characters, props and all sorts of fun stuff :D These are some of the main characters in my story (which I'm yet to fine tune, more details soon!). My idea for this assignment is to develop a story for an animated short (which would hypothetically run for no longer than 1 minute), so I want the style to be kept simple, colorful, bold, fast paced and energetic. This one is just a sketch of how I want the characters to look and I might explore more ways of painting digitally because there is so much to learn and so many ways I could approach my paintings!

Halloween Costume Idea

Now, I know it's a bit too early for this, but I was thinking how awesome it would be if I was to dress up as a gigantic boulder and just roll down the street like a crazy-maniacal-boulder-thingy like this. I haven't really figured out how I would make the boulder and the whole rolling around the street part yet. But, details! Pfft.

Random, I know. :D

P.S: I'm thinking about hooking up an inbuilt speaker to the boulder so it will play this.

Escape! Character Sculpt

This was so much fun to make :D Wanted to make a sculpture of Al Cap-on from the board game characters I designed, so here it is. I haven't really done a character head sculpt before and thought that I should get some practice in especially since I'm taking a Dimensional Illustration class next semester :D So excited!

Sculpted this with super sculpey clay, baked it for about half an hour and then painted him with acrylic paint and sewed his costume/cap out of an old striped t-shirt I had, painted more stripes in since there weren't enough, put on a light rusty paint wash over the fabric to make it look more grungy and voila :) *click to enlarge*

P.S: Summer is going so well! I bought a plane ticket to go home in December! Woot! OMGIAMSOEXCITED!! AND I got a second job at this ice cream shop and the ice cream is to die for! I get free ice cream everyday so life is good! :D Plus going to see me bestie B.I and see William Fitzsimmons in concert while I'm there, so yea, um, summer is going really good!!! :D

Escape!

This was our board game assignment for my Ad/Graph team class. My team liked the character designs and the idea I pitched for a prison escape game so we went along with that and this is the end result. The whole idea of the game is to well, escape from prison, dig through tunnels, beat, fight, strangle, chop up a few guards along the way and get to the escape boats!

The character designs, logo, tool card designs, and character cards were done by moi :D and the rest by my lovely team members who did a great job in pulling this all together. Our board game got in the annual student show too! It's now on display in a lovely glass box in the Ad/Graph department in our school :D Yay!

Meet my friend Pork-shop. He is probably one of the coolest artists at my school. Love his work :) This week we decided to draw one another, so here's my take on him. Did a bit of experimenting on the colors and texures, and kept things pretty simple. Hope y'all enjoy!

Ever wonder what that yellow puddle was when you were walking on the road? Ever wonder why it smelled like pee in totally random places?

Meet Mr. Pee Puddles. He pees. Just about anywhere. Yep. He's cool like that.

This week has been super hectic. Super. The school closed for two days because it was snowing fudge buckets. Even then I didn't have time to relax because there was so much of homework to do. I realize I don't doodle as much any more because of this and I decided to do a sketch a week just for fun. Just for myself. I'm going to try and stick to this. No promises, but I will try :) Scanned the doodle, inked and colored in Corel Painter. I haven't used painter before I came here, but I'm beginning to love it. Yep.

Some pages from the new Moleskine watercolor sketchbook I bought myself for Christmas. We got our Illustration Methods sketchbook list over break and this time there are loads of interesting things for us to sketch! I started off with the animal sketches because I haven't really tried my hand at drawing animals except for cartoon doodles of elephants :)

I didn't think I'd enjoy drawing animals this much, but I do!! :D

*Be a better artist than I was last year. I want to draw more from life, I want to draw more nakey people and I want to paint more. yep yep.

*Have an exhibition when I come back home for summer break. Maybe even have more than one. I'm excited! :D

So I've wanted to record stuff for a while now, but didn't get around to it because I didn't have a mic. B.I gave me a web cam for my b'day so decided to make use of it. I've always loved the lyrics to this song. Figured out how to play it on the guitar, and recorded it.The quality isn't that good for recording vocals of course, but meh, it's the only mic I have so I'm happy.

Poster designs for Galle Literary Festival

This was for our Advertising/Graphic Design Concepts class. Had to choose and event make an event poster. I wanted to make the design super elaborate so ended up doing a lions head with all that detail. Had to paint this and add the details with an ink pen in three hours since I woke up late and had to rush (real mature of me, I know :P). But I reckon it turned out okay. My teacher gave me extra time to scan the poster so we could have a copy. I scanned it in, and then was messing around in good ol' PS4 and did another version of it just for fun. I kinda like the zoomed in version better, because the shape of the design is kinda cool :)

Tell me which one you guys and girls like best :)

Design for Illustration final. We were given eight words, and to make up character to define each word. I decided to do a family of characters. From left to right, the characters are Di Namik, George Metrik, Ace Metrik, Psi Metrik, Nat "The Ape" Urale, Rith Mike, Inany Mate, Any Mate. ;)

For our advertising/graphic design team class we had to redesign a product. Our team chose coffee tumblers. And each team member had to choose a different audience and make their own designs. I chose to do sippy cups/kid tumblers :D Had way too much fun with these designs. I did more sketches but since time ran out I had to choose four designs and turn them in for our final :)

Was real fun making up the characters. We could only use 5 colors for this. Since it was an open medium assignment, I chose cut paper :D

This was our 2nd assignment for Design for Illustration class. This was a word catalyst assignment too. This time we had to choose a word which was either a thought or a conception. Done in Illustrator, was a fun little assignment.

Sophomore year has been hectic so far, only four weeks in to it and I'm already working my butt off on assignments. I'm learning a lot and really enjoying all of the classes. This was our first assignment for our Design for Illustration class. We were given a word as a catalyst and our teacher asked to do something like a spot illustration. We had to incorporate space, volume, contour and vignette in to our design. So I decided on this. I did the background digitally and of course used cut paper for the rest.

Applying for new schools to transfer to by the end of the month so I'll hopefully get a better scholarship from somewhere else and I wont have to quit college. Hopefully. Fingers and toes crossed.

Word of the day,
Vignette / vee-nyet / . n. a small illustration which fades into its background without a definite border.

This ladies and gentle fish, is the 2nd part of the Still Life assignment we had to do in our 2D Design Class. We had to abstract first and then figure out how we could put those abstracted still life thingies in to the Vignette design. I tell ya, abstracting is hard. And here I thought that all I had to do was draw a bunch of things that made no sense what so ever. Boy was I wrong.

But then after finally coming up with a design, came the fun part!
